First Faces of the Ancients Murals Go Live
I recently wrote in my last blog article about bringing our ancient ancestors to life on the wall murals I paint. Back in July I finally completed a mural of a Pictish tribesman and his dog on the Tullibody–Menstrie cycle route in Clackmannanshire. This wasn’t a street art or graffiti mural commission, but a personal mural I had been planning for a while. It’s painted on an underpass below Alloa Road. and shows a late age “Pict” with his dog resembling a Scottish Deerhound. Since I completed it, I’ve been blown away by the number of people stopping to take a look — it went viral on facebook and it’s already become a local talking point and even been featured in the local press
Why I’m Focusing on History and Nature
For years I ran Scottish Graffiti Murals and painted a wide variety of commissions. But over time I realised I wanted to focus on what really inspires me: European nature, wildlife, and Scotland’s ancient history.
During a difficult spell a couple of years ago, I spent a lot of time in the forests, at the lochs around the central belt and west coast of Scotland. That gave me the mental space to think about I really wanted to paint and what direction to push my work and this site - Scottish Graffiti Murals. I wanted to paint the woods. I started imagining the animals that once lived here — wolves, bears, lynx — and then I thought about the people who shared that land: the Picts, Scoti, Gaelic speaking tribes and later Vikings and Angles in places. That combination of wildlife, mythology, and history felt like something unique to build my work around.
Odin Under the M8 in Glasgow
As a nod to the Viking part of our ancestry I also painted a mural of the Norse / Viking God Odin a few weeks ago. I pondered for ages what to do in terms of a Viking mural, a warrior, a spearman, a swordsman and eventually decided on Odin as a powerful figure, a powerful portrait of the All Father as a tribute to him. I painted him at the Kingston DIY skatepark
A Benchmark for My Future Work
This mural in Menstrie and the mural of Odin are more than just murals for me — they’re benchmarks. They mark the start of a new chapter where I focus on historical murals in Scotland that still connect strongly to nature.
For me, this is a tribute to all the ancient ancestors who lived across Scotland — the Caledonian tribes, Scoti, Picts, Vikings, and others.
